The Origin of Hangul, 훈민정음
안녕하세요[Annyunhaseyo],Hello!
Welcome to K-Universe🚀
If you are a Korean learner, I strongly recommend you know the word “훈민정음[hoonmin jungeum]”.
It is related to the birth of the Korean language.
세종대왕 King Sejong(1397-1450)
the creatot of the Korean alphabet, known as Hangul, in 1443.
🎈The beginning of Hangul
If you look for the meaning, “훈민정음” means ” Hunminjeongeum (The Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People), 訓民正音 ” and refers to the Korean alphabet created by King Sejong in 1443.
“훈민정음” was the official name used during the Joseon Dynasty,
and the current name “한글[Hangul]” came later as another name for the Korean language.
(FYI, Korean teacher Ju Si-gyeong, in 1912, created the term ‘Hangul’.)
In Korea, we celebrate Hangul Day on October 9th every year to cherish and appreciate the importance of the Korean language.
🎀 How it works
The vowels of Hangul are composed of ‘•’ representing the round sky, ‘ㅡ’ representing the earth, and ‘ㅣ’ representing a person.
For example:
ㅣ + • ⇨ ㅏ • + ㅣ ⇨ ㅓ
As ‘ㅣ’ represents a person, it is explained that ‘•’ is placed next to it to signify living together.
- + ㅡ ⇨ ㅗ ㅡ + • ⇨ ㅜ
As ‘ㅡ’ signifies the earth supporting everything, it is explained that ‘ㅡ’ is written above or below ‘•’.
