🎁Neutralization(중화)

Neutralization refers to the phenomenon where different sounds change into the same sound in specific phonetic or phonemic environments. And this typically occurs at the end of a word or before a consonant.

  • The sounds ‘ㄱ’, ‘ㅋ’, and ‘ㄲ’ people prounce are different in initial positions, such as ‘가’ (ga), ‘카’ (ka), and ‘까’ (kka).

However, when these sounds appear at the end of a word or before a consonant, they are pronounced uniformly as [ㄱ], as in ‘책’ [책], ‘부엌'[부억], and ‘밖’ [박]. This phenomenon is called consonant neutralization.

Similarly, ‘ㄷ’, ‘ㅌ’, ‘ㅅ’, ‘ㅆ’, ‘ㅈ’, and ‘ㅊ’ are realized as ‘ㄷ’ at the end of a word or before a consonant, while ‘ㅂ’ and ‘ㅍ’ are both realized as ‘ㅂ’. This is also due to consonant neutralization.
